For the love of plants

For the love of plants

Last week we had a bit of fun on my social media accounts. I had everyone guess how many houseplants they thought I had in my home. I was shocked! Ha!

Hello I’m Krystal & I have acquired 88 plants over the course of one year

88 plants!!! Holy cow!

I guess our love for the great outdoors sparked a need for more lush green spaces inside.

It’s also super fun to watch the vines crawl along the walls and bridge the gap between inside + outside.

For me I always had this weird feeling about being inside a sterile building or the opposite, a cluttered one. Naturally I went through a minimalist phase - which was hilarious because I actually thought we could live without a couch. haha! I went a little too extreme on that end. Although going through that process made me realize it wasn’t just stuff I didn’t want, it was what was missing in my home that I needed. Eventually the plants found me and we have been living wonderfully together ever since.

I start with color. Color makes a room come alive! Give me a can of paint and an unlimited supply to plants and I will throw together a room of your dreams.

A white wall is just a blank canvas

I love the way our dramatic living room walls look!

I’m going to share some tips that I have learned along the way. Beware - it may inspire you to acquire 88 plants as well.

Found your dream plant but it’s looking half dead?

Don’t be afraid to rescue a plant that looks half dead - for example my string of pearls. He grew back beautifully with the right light, water and love. I think sometimes It’s tough for a store to give each plant what it needs so scoop that baby up and bring him home for some lovin.

My second tip is to map out the direction of your home. If you know your Dining room gets mostly east and south sun, you can plan to have tropical and high light plants there.

South + east sun in our dining room.

I just love the way hanging plants look so I try to add them in every room. Also I don’t know if the summer sun is going to be too intense for these guys so I opted for shear curtains so I can always pull them over for some coverage.

Next up… our master bedroom

It was so nice to lay here when I was sick just staring at my little jungle.

Oh my big beautiful Bert! The one in the middle is my Monstera Adansonii! Such a wonderful addition for any wall that doesn’t get intense sun - these babies like bright or shady areas. I’m training mine to vine up and everywhere! I honestly can’t wait!!! These guys can also be a hanging plant as well.

I saw him for the first time at a local greenhouse but I was shocked at how much he was so I left him. Few days later that same greenhouse was having a 30% off sale - of course I went back and rescued him.

Which brings me to my next tip! Besides big box stores like home depot - local greenhouses are the bomb diggity! I find all my cool plants there and I have caught them at certain times of the year when they have a good discount on houseplants. Keep your eyes peeled for sales!

Even buy those smaller plants to save money because you bet those babies are gonna take off when you find a good spot for them!

Here is a close up of my Heart-leaf Philodendron and the holder I made for him.

All you need is thick hemp and your hands! I promise it’s not as hard as it looks. I cut six equal strands and just eye balled the knots for the pot! So so easy! The cost? Pennies for each of them to make and maybe 5 minutes of my time. DIY for the win!

The Kitchen

This window is my pride and joy! It came with the house and it’s the best thing about our kitchen! I was never one to bring succulents home because they usually always die - until now! I’m all about this greenhouse window which even in the winter has kept all of my succulents alive and growing perfectly! Like that string of bananas in the middle!

So much life in one picture!

Of course the very last tip is to get your butt to the store and buy a plant! Have fun and experiment!

I want you to be at our first plant party in the spring! Propagating + plant talk + hugs… sounds fun right!?

Make sure you’re following me on social media to get the invite!
